Tikkun Olam (Social Action)

Rabbi Tarfon, a 1st Century Sage, wrote, “It is not incumbent upon us to fix the world. Nor are we free to abandon it.” One of the cornerstones of Judaism is its commitment to Tikkun Olam (social action), to repair the world. Congregation B’nai Jeshurun embraces its commitment to social action within our walls, our community and around our country and the world. Whether it is feeding the homeless and impoverished or responding to natural disasters, our congregation has a proud history of answering Rabbi Tarfon’s call enthusiastically to give aid and comfort to those in need.

Guided by the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam, which means, literally, “to heal the world,” our committee organizes projects to feed, clothe, attend to and nurture children, families, the sick, and the elderly—both locally and overseas.

Volunteers are our most precious resource, and we appreciate that often your free time is limited. That’s why we offer volunteers a flexible range of time commitments. We also offer our volunteers a variety of projects from which they can choose.
