Why is genealogy so popular today? Genealogy looks at the past, and tries to reclaim the memory of what was, while allowing those memories to help form our own identity and to shape what we will be transmitting to future generations. Knowing where we came from gives us a better sense of where and who we are today and influences the future of our families.

During these two interactive sessions, we will explore what life was like in “the old country,” cultural distinctions of the Litvaks, Galitzianers and German Jews, how surnames were chosen or imposed, the unique challenges your ancestors faced in the land of their birth and the often-unanticipated challenges of immigration and integration into American society. The journey from Europe to Ellis Island to Essex County and beyond is a fascinating one which we invite you to explore with Cantor Stahl.
