Who is a Jew? This has been one of the most troubling questions of our time. On one hand, we should absolutely understand what defines our identity. On the other, too many, for all of the wrong reasons, use this question as some kind of spiritual or religious litmus test….one that is used to determine who gets to be “in” and who is to be kept “out”.

As our lives have evolved over the last twenty years, the definition of what determines Jewish-ness has changed. Are we Jewish by virtue of our blood line; our actions, our thoughts, our rituals, how religious we act in the world? How should we decide on who can be a member of a synagogue and who can act as leadership in the Jewish community?

In some manner these questions smack of purity tests, while on another level, people continue to ask and wonder. We at TBJ have not moderated our bylaws on these questions for well over a couple of generations.

Come and learn together about questions of identity that most are fearful to talk about, but here, not only will we ask, but we will dialogue in the meaningful and helpful ways that our tradition has set forth. And, we will take the results of our study to our own Board, so that we can proudly modify our communal law to reflect who we have become today.
